Updated: Sep 10, 2020

COVID-19. The virus that wreaked havoc internationally and affected the lives of far too many. From turning on the news channel first thing in the morning and hearing, "Good morning, here is the weekly forecast," to "Good morning, here is the current count of COVID-19 cases," the futures of millions of students, business owners, families, and essential workers have been jeopardized. With this sudden change in lifestyle, students of all ages globally are in search for ways to extend their helping hand to their community. Whether you are in middle school or are currently in the work field, offering your support to your community has no limitations! Read on to discover ways you can advocate for your community.

  1. Create masks for patients and workers at your local hospital, nursing home, or homeless shelter: The shortage of masks in high-risk places is putting the safety of many individuals at risk for exposure.

  2. Share your skills with others: Set up online tutoring lessons to students or teach group classes in nearly any field (FYI: you can sign up to be a mentor at InspireX!)

  3. Write "support cards" to the elderly at a a nursing home: Travel restrictions has made it difficult for families to visit their loved ones at nursing homes. Show that you care for and are thinking about the elderly people by writing a short, heart-felt card for them. It may not seem much, but it will mean the world to them!

  4. Support small businesses: It has not been easy for the past few months for owners of small businesses. The virus has caused a financial turmoil, leaving many businesses to permanently shut down. Want to take it a step further? Contact the owner(s) of the local business and offer to serve as their social media manager in order to better advertise their business at no cost.
